Southern African Development Community Statement on the Situation in the Republic of Madagascar

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has received with deep concern reports of violent protests in the Republic of Madagascar, particularly in the capital city of Antananarivo and other locations, including Antsirabé, since Thursday, 25 September 2025.

SADC conveys its unwavering support and solidarity to the Government and the people of Madagascar during this difficult period. We commend the Government’s steadfast commitment to restoring peace and stability, and to safeguarding the security, dignity, and welfare of all Malagasy citizens.

We note that the demonstrations have regrettably resulted in an unconfirmed number of fatalities, injuries, and extensive damage to both public and private property, leading to the imposition of a night-time curfew in the capital.

The loss of life, harm to individuals, and destruction of property are very unfortunate and run counter to the principles of peace, unity, and sustainable development that lie at the heart of the SADC vision. SADC calls upon all stakeholders to exercise calm, restraint, and create an environment for constructive engagement and peaceful resolution of any differences in the supreme interest of national unity, peace and reconciliation.

SADC reaffirms its full solidarity with the Government and people of Madagascar and remains committed to supporting their efforts to restore peace, and stability throughout the country.

In this context, SADC urges law enforcement authorities to act with maximum restraint and professionalism, while encouraging all protesters to channel their grievances through lawful and peaceful means, in the interest of the nation and its future.
