His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi and Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, has appointed Honourable Justice Andrew K. C. Nyirenda, Senior Counsel (SC), former Chief Justice of the Republic of Malawi, as the Head of Mission (HoM) of SEOM Seychelles, and mandated the SADC Secretariat to coordinate the SEOM, including the facilitation of in-country deployment of observers.
This is in line with Article 3 of the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021), which provides that SADC shall observe all general elections held in its Member States.
Hon. Justice Nyirenda arrived on Mahé Island today to commence his duties as Head of Mission of the SEOM. The SEOM is deploying election observers to all the District in Seychelles to observe the pre- and post-election phases and the polling day. The HoM shall pay a courtesy call on H. E. Sylvestre Radegonde, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Tourism of the Republic of Seychelles, before the launch of the SEOM. He will also meet with the leadership of the Electoral Commission of Seychelles, the Commissioner of the Seychelles Police Force and other electoral stakeholders as part of the SEOM mandate.
The Launch of the SEOM will be held on the 20th September 2025 from 11h00 to 12h30 at the Eden Bleu Hotel. All electoral stakeholders and members of the public are welcome to attend the event which will also elaborate on the SEOM mandate.
