World AIDS Day Events at SADC House

This year’s commemoration was different from previous years. After the traditional morning walk from the Secretariat headquarters to the Gaborone Golf Club, a breakfast discussion was convened, focusing on Sustainable Financing and Ownership of HIV response. This topic is of great significance since donor funding on HIV has been dwindling rapidly over the past five years, and there is also a need for SADC Member States the response to this situation. Lead by the SADC Secretariat’s Dr V. Chipfakacha, the participants were drawn from the United Nations, Civil Society, Development Partners, the Media and labour movements. The general public also participated in the discussion. The reason for this discussion was to find  consensus on how to deal with the two challenges at hand. From a regional perspective, it is important to maintain the momentum by increasing domestic funding and Public Private Partnership approaches to the response. This will ultimately build responsibility in the region and ownership of the response to this epidemic.
