Update from the on-going SADC Council of Ministers preparatory meetings

On Thursday 10 March 2016, SADC Secretariat Director of Planning Policy and Resource Mobilization Dr Angelo Mondlane briefed the Media on the status of the implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) and the measures taken by the secretariat to mitigate the drought situation in the region.

The Media briefing took place in the margin of the preparatory meetings of the Council of Ministers to take place from 14 to 15 March 2016, at Gaborone International Convention Center in Gaborone, Botswana.

To date, since Saturday the 5th of March, four meetings, namely, Meeting of Senior Treasury Officials, Meeting of Ministerial Task Force Senior Officials, Meeting of the Standing Committee of Senior Officials and Meeting of the Finance Committee, have taken place and the outcomes will be communicated after the Council of the Ministers meeting.

The meeting of the Senior Officials of the Task Force took place on the 7th and 8th of March 2016 to prepare for the SADC Ministerial Taskforce on Regional Economic Integration Meeting which takes place on the 13th of March 2016.  Progress on industrialization and market integration, Infrastructure development in support of regional integration were discussed among others. Prior to that, the Senior Treasury Officials met from 4th to 5th March 2016.

On Wednesday the 9th of March, the Standing Committee of Senior Officials met to prepare background documents for the Meeting of the Finance Committee held on the 10th of March. The reports from the Meeting of the Finance Committee will be adopted on  the 11th of March for the Meeting of the Ministers of Finance taking place tomorrow Saturday the 12th of March 2016 to review.

The Meeting of the Standing Committee of Senior Officials and the Meeting of the Finance Committee reviewed the 2015-2016 budget and discussed the allocation of the 2016-2017 budget.

The meetings were chaired by SADC Chairperson of the Senior Officials, Dr Taufila Nyamadzabo.
