SADC MISSION IN THE DRC CONDUCTS ‘’TRAINING TOGETHER FOR PEACE IN THE DRC’’

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (SAMIDRC) was deployed on 15th December 2023 and mandated to support the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to restore peace and security to create a secure environment in the Eastern DRC. To achieve the Mandate,  a high level of cooperation is needed with the Congolese Army, the Forces Armees de la Republic Democratique du Congo (FARDC).

The Forces from the Republics of Malawi, South Africa, the United Republic of Tanzania and FARDC are working together to fight armed groups operating in the Eastern DRC.  In the execution of the Mandate, these Forces are cooperating. The range of cooperation is not limited to joint operations, logistics, intelligence and training in the different fields.

To ensure the interoperability of Forces during the joint operation of SAMIDRC Forces and FARDC, SAMIDRC deploys a Mission Training Team (MTT). The MTT trains all cooperating Forces to operate together as one Unit. Specifically, interoperability enables all units to operate together allowing them to communicate and to share common doctrine and procedures.

The training aims at optimising physical adaptation and improving efficiency ithe use of equipment and physical performance. All activities are crucial for overall military readiness.  These trainings allow better coordination between militaries, observation of enemy tactics, and serve as a visible show of strength and cooperation for the SAMIDRC and FARDC.

The Mission Training Team started the joint training soon after the deployment of SAMIDRC. This training is divided into units of specialties; infantry, artillery, marine and specialised units. Senior Mission Leadership has taken part in all required trainings, demonstrating leadership and deep commitment to the Mission.

It is essential to highlight that all trainings are entirely conducted within the SAMIDRC area of responsibility. Usually, the equability of reality with security, high performance, and interoperability are the main priorities in these activities.

Important subjects are also included; the Charter of the United Nations and with its obligations under international law to respect, promote and encourage respect for international humanitarian, human rights and refugee law. To ensure smooth run during various training and operations, SAMIDRC Force and FARDC have established liaison offices at different levels and locations.

The MTT has successfully completed several military trainings. The successful completion of these joint training underscores the importance of ongoing cooperation between SAMIDRC Force and FARDC in the mission to restore peace and security to create a secure environment in the Eastern DRC.
