The Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), His Excellency Mr. Elias Magosi, has reaffirmed the regional bloc’s commitment to supporting Madagascar’s efforts towards constitutional governance, national reconciliation, and sustainable development during a courtesy meeting with Hon. Alice N'DIAYE, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Madagascar.
The meeting was held on the margins of the 28th Meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ (MCO) in Salima, Malawi, where the Minister highlighted Madagascar’s readiness to continue working closely with SADC, particularly through the SADC Secretariat to facilitate the implementation of decisions aimed at addressing the country’s political challenges.
Hon. N'DIAYE welcomed the decisions taken by SADC and reaffirmed Madagascar’s full support for resolutions adopted by the regional body. She emphasized the Government’s commitment to maintaining close consultations with the SADC Panel of Elders, the Mediation Reference Group, and the SADC Secretariat as part of ongoing efforts to promote dialogue, national unity, and political stability.
The Minister also expressed appreciation for the continued engagement and technical support provided by the SADC Secretariat in advancing Madagascar’s political process. She further thanked the SADC Summit for its guidance and direction, reaffirming her country’s commitment to implementing all decisions and recommendations adopted by the Summit.
In addition, Hon. N'DIAYE conveyed Madagascar’s gratitude to the Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation for the leadership and support extended towards efforts aimed at restoring stability and strengthening democratic governance in the country.
The SADC Executive Secretary welcomed the update provided by the Government of Madagascar and commended the country’s continued engagement with the regional bloc. He reiterated that SADC’s primary objective is to support Madagascar’s full return to constitutional governance, political stability, and sustainable development.
H.E Magosi stressed that progress towards these objectives depends largely on the implementation of agreed commitments and reforms by the Government of Madagascar. He assured the Minister that the SADC Secretariat would continue to work closely with the Government to support its efforts and facilitate sustained progress.
H.E Magosi further emphasized the importance of implementing decisions adopted by the SADC Summit, including the promotion of an inclusive political process that accommodates all Malagasy stakeholders.
He highlighted that inclusivity remains fundamental to building lasting peace and national cohesion, stressing that all Malagasy citizens should have the opportunity to participate in shaping the country’s future.
Reaffirming SADC’s goodwill towards the people of Madagascar, the Executive Secretary said that the regional body remains a trusted partner committed to supporting the country’s return to constitutional governance. He added that SADC’s engagement is guided by the desire to help Madagascar achieve enduring political stability, strengthen democratic institutions, and create conditions conducive to national development and prosperity.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to continued cooperation and close consultation as Madagascar advances the implementation of SADC Summit decisions and works towards achieving lasting peace, stability, and democratic governance.
