SADC Audit Committee Orientation Workshop

Members of the SADC Audit Committee converged in Gaborone, Botswana for their orientation workshop taking place at the Gaborone Sun Hotel from, March 30 to 31, 2015.

Comprised of Auditors from Malawi, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, this is the first time that both the substantive and alternate members of the SADC Audit Committee have come together for orientation purposes.

The workshop was also attended by representatives of Ernest and Young who made a presentation on Governance given their vast expertise in the area of corporate governance. The workshop was also addressed by the Deputy Executive Secretaries for Regional Integration and for Budget and Finance and all the Directors and heads of Stand-alone units of the SADC Secretariat also made presentations on their respective mandates for the auditors' appreciation and empowerment in executing their mandate.

The SADC Audit Committee was established in accordance with Article 11 (g) of the SADC Treaty and delivers on its mandate as outlined in the Audit Committee Charter, Audit Committee Handbook, SADC Internal Audit Charter and all other relevant SADC policy and regulatory instruments.

The purpose and authority of the SADC Audit Committee include reviewing of compliance with financial, regulatory, corporate governance, accountability and transparency framework.

The workshop was officially opened on behalf of the SADC Executive Secretary by Dr. Thembinkosi Mhlongo, SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration with the speech attached below.
