The SADC Secretariat led by the Executive Secretary: Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax has on 2 – 3 July 2015 convened the first meeting of the SADC Anti-Corruption Committee (SACC) at SADC House in Gaborone, Botswana.
The meeting discussed among others, the operationalisation of the SACC within the SADC Secretariat, an issue which has remained outstanding since the Protocol against Corruption entered into force in 2005, and the development of the SACC Annual Business Plan to enable implementation of the SACC programmes.
In her opening remarks, the Executive Secretary remarked that the work of the SACC will greatly contribute to SADC efforts to fight Corruption in the Region and that the operationalisation of the Protocol Against Corruption, in particular the mainstreaming of the SACC within the SADC Organ structures was long overdue. The Executive Secretary also stated that the establishment of the SADC Anti-Corruption Committee reaffirms SADC Member States determination to eliminate the scourge of corruption through the adoption of effective preventative and deterrent measures and the enforcement of relevant legislations against all types of corruption and also complement SADC’s related programmes and as such contribute to the realisation of the objective of SADC‘s regional development and integration agenda.
