The SADC Executive Secretary, H.E Elias M. Magosi, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with His Excellency Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, the Under Secretary-General of the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism (UNOCT). The MoU was signed on the margins of the 79th United Nations’ General Assembly session on 26 September 2024 in New York, United States of America. The signing of the MoU marks a major milestone in promoting mutual cooperation between the two organisations in combatting terrorism and violent extremism.
Both parties highlighted the urgent need to operationalise the MoU as terrorism remains a global phenomenon and is one of the threats to international peace and security, economic development, and social integration in the #SADC region and beyond. At the occasion, Mr. Vladimir Voronkov highlighted the need for African-led initiatives to counter terrorism and violent extremism.
On his part, the #SADC Executive Secretary, acknowledged the important role played by UNOCT during the consultative processes leading to the establishment of the #SADC Regional Counter-Terrorism Center (RCTC) in the United Republic of Tanzania and in developing the #SADC Regional Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
Both parties committed to operationalising the MoU and carrying out joint efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism.
