H. E. Dr. Amani Abeid Karume, Former President of Zanzibar, arrived in Maputo, Mozambique, today to commence his duties as the Head of Mission (HoM) of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to the country’s upcoming National, Legislative and Provincial Elections that are scheduled for 9th October 2024.
The SEOM HoM was appointed by Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania and Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, to lead the Mission. The Organ Chairperson also mandated the SADC Secretariat to coordinate the SEOM, including the facilitation of in-country deployment of observers, in line with Article 3 of the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021), which provides that SADC shall observe all General Elections held in its Member States.
The Official Launch of SEOM Mozambique will take place on 03 October 2024, 11:00 at Hotel Avenida, Maputo.
The SEOM HoM is scheduled to pay a courtesy call to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Mozambique before the SEOM launch. He will also meet with the leadership of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) of Mozambique, the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), and the SADC Ambassadors and High Commissioners Accredited to the Republic of Mozambique. The SEOM HoM will also meet various electoral stakeholders between 1 and 10 October 2024 and conduct election day observations on polling day.
