As a backbone of Regional Integration and a key means of achieving economic development and poverty eradication, infrastructure is a priority within SADC. In order to inform the SADC Council of Ministers and the Heads of State and Government on progress toward infrastructure goals, SADC prepared its Infrastructure Development Status Report in 2009.

The Report reviews achievements, challenges, and opportunities of SADC regional infrastructure projects across five sectors – energy, tourism, transport, communications and ICT, and water – following implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan. It also analyses the SADC Infrastructure Development Programme with a focus on instruments, institutions and infrastructure. The Report identifies cross-cutting issues affecting infrastructure development in the region and proposes a way forward for accelerating implementation of regional infrastructure projects in line with SADC’s mission and vision.
