This annual report covers the global economic review and outlook, Africa’s economic performance and SADCs economic and social development largely based on variables and projections especially for the years 2007 and 2008.

The Report, similar to those of preceding years analyses foreign direct investment, fiscal performance, external debt and GDP per capita of the Community’s Member States. It reflects on issues of poverty reduction, the impact of HIV and Aids on life expectancy and employment and education issues.

The challenge for SADC countries; lies in aiming for growth that is employment intensive and pro-poor as well tackling poverty and HIV and AIDS—according to the section on challenges and prospects for the region provided in the Report. Further to this the general progress achieved to date towards implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) programmes by the SADC Secretariat is analysed.
