The SADC Annual Report for the period July 2000 to June 2001 is presented in four parts.
The first part is an overview of the World economy, the African economy in general and economic development in Southern Africa.
Main and sectoral developments are covered in the second part. The third part briefly outlines one of the land mark decisions taken by the Summit in March 20001 in Windhoek, Namibia on restructuring of the SADC institutions and operations—to be completed within a period of two years from the time the decision was taken. The fourth part provides relevant statistical data and charts on the performance of the SADC Member States.
The Annual Report covers the challenge of HIV/AIDS and debt. It also outlines what the region is doing to deal with the critical social issues of the control of illicit drug trafficking and abuse, demining activities in the landmine infected areas of the region and the control of trade in small arms and light weapons. It further covers the launching of the implementation of the SADC Protocol on Trade on the 1st September 2000 as representing a pivotal step towards deeper integration in Southern Africa and a step towards the establishment of a Free Trade Area in 2008 and the economic implication this has for the region.
