Recognising the severity of climate change’s potential impacts to Africa, three Regional Economic Communities – the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, the East African Community, and the Southern Africa Development Community – initiated the Programme on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in the Eastern and Southern African Region in 2010.
This five-year initiative aims to address climate change in the region while building economic and social resilience. Interested in adding value and avoiding duplication of actions already occurring, the Programme establishes objectives for the region, an implementation framework, a budget breakdown, and reporting requirements. Believing achievements will only happen through a holistic approach that integrates small and large farmers, service providers, financiers and policymakers, the Programme seeks to incorporate its objectives into long-term planning and programming for the region, building sustainability throughout the duration of the Programme and after its completion.
