SADC TRIBUNAL BRIEF HISTORY

17th August, 1992

On this day, the Heads of State or Government of SADC concluded the Institutional Treaty of the Community of the Development of Southern Africa (SADC). The SADC Tribunal was established as one of the Institutions in Article 9 (g) of the said Treaty.

August, 2001

Council of Ministers in its meeting held in August, 2001 in Malawi designated the seat of the Tribunal to be Windhoek, Namibia.

August, 2005

Although the SADC Tribunal was created in August, 1992, its operationalisation only started with the appointment of the Members, during the Summit of Heads of State or Government, of 17th to 18th August 2005 in Gaborone, Botswana.

18th November, 2005

A historic day for SADC Tribunal. The SADC Tribunal house was officially inaugurated in Windhoek Namibia by the Right Honourable Nahas Angula, MP, Prime Minister of the Republic of Namibia. The 10 nominated Members of the Tribunal were also sworn in by the Hon the Chief Justice of Namibia Mr Justice Peter Shivute.
