The Executive Secretary oversees a series of functional Units within the SADC Secretariat that are responsible for activities associated with so-called Cross-Cutting Issues, affecting the Regional Integration agenda of SADC.

Organ on Politics Defense and Security
The formal institution of SADC mandated with supporting the achievement and maintenance of security and the rule of law in the SADC region, as stated in the SADC Treaty, the Protocol on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation and the Strategic Indicative Plan for the Organ Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation (SIPO).

Gender Unit
Tasked with facilitating, coordinating and monitoring the implementation of SADC Gender Commitments at national and regional levels, as well as overseeing the development and application of skills in gender analysis and gender mainstreaming in policy and programme/project development, review, planning and budgeting throughout SADC.

Macro Economic Surveillance
Supporting the implementation of the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) through the provision of policy guidance and advice to Member States in macro-economic policy and planning, including monetary and fiscal policies and programmes that promote economic liberalisation and development, trade and investment; and the achievement of macro-economic convergence in the SADC Region.
