Specific objective

 Increased production and marketing of white sesame by smallholders
 
Major Activities
  • Inception workshops to assess stakeholders perceptions and set the monitoring targets
  • Baseline surveys to provide socio-economic and biological data on which to assess progress towards the project objectives.
  • Conversion of farmers groups into SACCOs
  • Expansion of community seed production for white sesame
  • Develop links with export companies and sesame producersgroups
  • Market survey in Mozambiqueto evaluate the present value chain
  • Validate and promote ICM systems for profitable sesame production
  • On-farm screening of white seame varieties
  • Evaluation of control methods for sesame flea beetle.
  • On-farm validation of improved planting methods for sesame seed
  • Survey of seame farmers and  private sector export companies to assess effect of current agricultural policy on investment in commercial farming
  • Use results from survey as the basis to recommend policy change; in final year follow-up on impact of any policy changes
  • Develop communication strategy and produce information media.
  • Exchange visits between the two partner countries to improve knowledge on market chain development and sesame production technology.
  • End of project stakeholder workshop
  • Writing and production of final technical report.
