Overall objective
  • To increase offtake of quality animals in crop-livestock systems

Specific objectives

  • Assess the potential for strengthening commercial livestock production to provide guidance for policy/program design
  • Test & evaluate alternative product marketing systems & input delivery systems
  • Assess impact of strengthened input delivery & product markets
  • Establish a communication strategy
Major Activities
  • To conduct inter-linked diagnostic surveys
Compile information on current and potential livestock production systems
Explore relevant policies and regulations, market accessibility and networks of market agents
Assess household specific predispositions for increased livestock productivity and offtake
Assess local specific biophysical potential and susceptibility to degradation
  • To refine selected product marketing systems
Facilitate public-private partnerships in livestock production and dialogue on joint investments
Determine options for improving livestock product marketing and technology integration
Monitor and evaluate adoption of technologies within improved livestock marketing systems using the value chain approach
  • To facilitate alternative input delivery systems
Inventorize appropriate input delivery systems (technologies and organization)
Screen subsets of best bet technology options within farming systems context
Evaluate selected technologies and adoption within alternative product marketing systems
  • To analyze the impact of livestock commercialization
Assess direct impact of interventions on farmers’ welfare, institutional arrangements and the environment
Assess the wider impact of livestock commercialization on poverty and income distribution on different areas and stakeholder types
  • Disseminate different information packages on livestock technologies and commercialization
Evaluate impact of alternative dissemination strategies for messages on technology and market development
Engage all partners in a dialogue on evaluating technologies and markets in terms of farmer priorities
