    Declaration on Somalia (2011)

As of 2011, an ongoing famine in Somalia has affected 12 million people, including 1.5 million internally displaced persons, constituting a humanitarian disaster. Following SADC’s objectives of consolidating and maintaining peace and security through regional cooperation and integration, SADC passed its Declaration in Solidarity with the People and the Government of the Republic of Somalia on the Famine Situation Affecting the Country on 18th August 2011.

Recognising that the situation in Somalia will further displace people and contribute to loss of life unless addressed, the Declaration reaffirms SADC’s solidarity with the people and the government of Somalia and acknowledges SADC’s duty to alleviate suffering in the region. Therefore, SADC encourages Member States to consider offering humanitarian aid in the form of food and water, medical supplies, clothing, and shelter to the people of Somalia in order to stem the displacement of people and loss of life. The Declaration also confirms SADC’s intention to monitor the situation and to provide support for the region’s long-term recovery.
