Welcome to our newsletter for the SADC REDD+ information network! In this newsletter, you will find information about current developments on climate change and REDD+ with a special focus on the SADC region.

SADC official side-event “REDD+ without borders: The case for a regional REDD+ approach in SADC”
This side-event will take place on Wednesday, 7 December 2011 from 11.30pm to 13.00pm and present the results of a study SADC commissioned to examine the regional challenges and potentials for a regional REDD+ approach in a region where Member States not only differ in size but also in forest type and cover as well as economic development. It will also point out some potential solutions to the challenges faced by SADC Member States in their preparations for REDD+. For further information, click here

SADC side-event “Preparing for Climate Change experiences from regional organizations”
The SADC Secretariat, like many other regional organisations, has started working on a regional cross-sectoral climate change programme to support its Member States in dealing with the regional impacts of climate change. In order to exchange knowledge and benefit from lessons learned, SADC Secretariat invited regional organisations (ASEAN, CARICOM) to share their experiences from developing a regional climate change response at a panel discussion that will take place on Friday, 2 December 2011 from 12.00pm to 15.00pm at the Hotel Tropicana in Durban. GIZ hosts panel discussion on “Speaking with one voice: German support for SADC in the positioning for climate change”
The GIZ/SADC Sustainable Forest Management and Conservation programme is organising a panel discussion on 29 November 2011 from 15.00pm to 17.00pm at the Climate Change Response Expo in Durban. During the event experiences from SADC’s learning process of speaking with one voice on climate change will be presented, followed by a discussion on the results and impacts of the process.

SADC CNGO organises high-level policy dialogue on climate change
On 17 November 2011, SADC CNGO organised a high-level policy dialogue under the theme “Climate change in southern Africa – challenges and possibilities”. The event took place in Gaborone, Botswana and brought together stakeholders from SADC countries. SADC CNGO presented a policy research paper on climate change as input for the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban, South Africa. Winners of 2011 SADC Photo Competition announced
The SADC Photo Competition 2011 was held in the run-up to the UNFCCC COP17 and provided an opportunity to showcase the diversity of ecosystems in the SADC region to an international audience. The three winning pictures will be displayed at the SADC exhibition booth during the UNFCCC COP17 in Durban and each of the winners will receive a digital camera. For more information, click here.

FAO publication "Climate Change for Policy-Makers: An approach for integrating climate change in forest programmes in support of sustainable forest management"
This report published by FAO and the National Forest Programme Facility, is aimed at policy makers and seeks to support forest-related responses to climate change, achieve coherence with other sectors and national strategies on climate change and to provide guidance on an operational approach for integrating climate change in national forest programmes (NFPs). Workshops by REDD+ Partnership

UNFCCC launches Fast-Start Finance web module
The module is designed to facilitate access to information about implementation of developed countries’ commitments of fast-start finance, including forestry and investments. The module includes an interactive map showing both the contributing and recipient countries and the resources made available. It can be accessed here: http://unfccc.int/financeportal

FCPF Annual Report 2011 released
The Forest Carbon Partnership Facility has released its Annual Report 2011, including sections on capacity building for REDD+, establishment of a common readiness framework, and an analysis of strengths and weaknesses of the programme. To download the report, click here.

UNFCCC published addendum on REDD+
The UNFCCC Secretariat has published an addendum on REDD+, including a submission on Reference Emission Levels from Botswana. The document will be considered by the 35th session of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) during COP17 in Durban. To download the document, click here.

Journal of the Africa Adaptation Programme
UNDP released the first edition of The Baobab Coalition Journal, a report on the community activities and efforts under the Africa Adaptation Programme (AAP), featuring articles on progress, introduction to new techniques, reports and other useful information aimed to inform those working to build resilience across African countries.
