SADC official side-event “REDD+ without borders: The case for a regional REDD+ approach in SADC”
This side-event took place on Wednesday, 7 December 2011 from 11.30pm to 13.00pm. The event was opened by the SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Regional Integration Eng João Samuel Caholo and attracted over 50 participants. One of the activities at the side event was a presentation of the results of a study SADC commissioned to examine the regional challenges and potentials for a regional REDD+ approach in the SADC region. SADC side-event “Preparing for Climate Change experiences from regional organizations”
The SADC Secretariat, like many other regional organisations, has started working on a regional cross-sectoral climate change programme to support its Member States in dealing with the regional impacts of climate change. In order to exchange knowledge and benefit from lessons learned, SADC Secretariat invited the Caribbean Climate Change Community Center (CCCCC) to share its experiences from developing a regional climate change response at a panel discussion that took place on Friday, 2 December 2011 from 12.00pm to 15.00pm at the Hotel Tropicana in Durban. For more information, click here. The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the East African Community (EAC) also took part in the panel discussion.
UNFCCC publishes Angola’s submission on REDD+
The UNFCCC Secretariat published Angola’s submission on REDD+, supporting calls from the SADC region for a regional, ecosystems-based approach to REDD+. To access the submissions, please click here.
Congo Basin Forest Countries declaration of intent
Seven Central African countries and seven donor partner countries and the European Commission gathered in Durban, South Africa to renew commitment to an accelerated implementation of REDD+ in the Congo Basin. Read the press release here.

FAO remote sensing data
FAO has released initial results from a satellite-based remote sensing survey, showing new information on forest area declines between 1990 and 2005. Results show a much smaller rate of forest loss for Africa than previously estimated based on national reports. Further information here. Publication download
